Michael Hill
Dr.
Michael Hill (Calgary) has been selected as this year's
Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize winner. This
award recognizes emerging neurologists who have a strong
interest in and have demonstrated a passion for learning
and expanding the field of stroke research Applicants
should have an active involvement in providing patients
with the highest quality of compassionate care. Michael
will receive a prize of $1,500, complimentary
registration for the 56th Annual Meeting to be held in
San Francisco and recognition at the awards luncheon
there. Congratulations Michael!

(Calgary) (2003).

Alastair Buchan
The
Canadian Stroke Consortium Award of Excellence was
awarded to Dr. Alastair Buchan in October. This
award recognizes members who have had outstanding
careers or performed outstanding service in the field of
stroke. Alastair is extremely accomplished in the
field of stroke, he does basic clinical research, and
has organized the clinical service in Calgary, the
residency training aspects of stroke and the delivery of
clinical services there for stroke in Calgary. He has
over 130 peer reviewed papers, 20 chapters, over 200
abstracts and we know from his research activities
within the Stroke Consortium, our own organization, that
he has been a driving force for the generation of
original research for the stroke consortium.
Past
winners of the award include include Henry Barnett, Tony
Hakim, Vladimir Hachinski, and John Norris.

Henry J. M. Barnett
Canadian
Stroke Consortium long time member - Dr. Henry J. M.
Barnett has been named a Companion of the Order of
Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne
Clarkson, Governor General of Canada. The Order of
Canada recognizes people who have made a difference to
our country and it is the country's highest honour for
lifetime achievement. The announcement was made
yesterday. Dr. Barnett is an international leader in
stroke research. He has changed the practice of medicine
through his studies into Aspirin and stroke prevention,
as well as carotid endarterectomy. Many of today's
leaders in stroke research have been mentored by Dr.
Barnett. Dr. Barnett was one of 7 Companions of the
Order of Canada announced.

Andrew M. Demchuk
Andrew
M. Demchuk, MD, FRCPC, assistant professor in clinical
neurosciences at the University of Calgary, Alberta is the
winner of the 2003 American Academy of Neurology Michael
S. Stroke Leadership Prize. Dr. Demchuk received the
award during the American Academy of Neurology 55th Annual
Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, March 29 to April 5, 2003.

Michael Hill successfully defended his Master's Thesis the
other day and has obtained MSc status. His thesis title
Treatment Surveillance, the baseline CT scan and a
Clinical Prediction Rule for Prognosis in the Thrombolytic
Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke. Congratulations
Michael!

a series of reports from the Canadian Heart and Stroke
Surveillance System. It’s goal is to provide health
professionals, program managers and policy makers with an
overview of current trends in risk factors, interventions and
services, and health outcomes of heart disease and stroke in
Canada.
This document
has a valuable role to play in the prevention and management of
heart disease and stroke in Canada. It is regarded as the
authoritative source of cardiovascular information among medical
professionals in Canada.
This report
was produced by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, in
partnership with Health Canada’s Laboratory Centre for Disease
Control, Statistics Canada, the Canadian Institute for Health
Information, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the
Canadian Stroke Society.
