Stroke Registry enters Phase III. This is the largest body of data collected in Canada on acute stroke care and, quite possibly, one of the leading collections of stroke-care data in the world. Phase I and II were a success. Now the Registry of the Canadian Stroke Network, led by Drs. Frank Silver and Moira Kapral is beginning its third phase. In Phase III, the Registry is being tailored to meet the needs of the Co-ordinated Stroke Strategy in Ontario by monitoring its effectiveness. Data collection software has been redesigned and the Registry's nurse co-ordinators will be trained at a one-day workshop in Toronto on November 5th. The Registry will initially focus on Ontario and then roll out across the country.

The first county-by-country atlas of US stroke deaths confirms that Southerners and blacks are more likely to die from strokes than other Americans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report showed that blacks are 40% more likely to die of stroke than whites. South Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina had the highest rates of death by stroke. Northeastern states and Florida had the lowest stroke death rates. The overall stroke death rate for adults 35 and older was 121 per 100,000 people. The range among states varied from 89 per 100,000 in New York to 169 per 100,000 in South Carolina.

A $1.5 million project (Adult Stem Cells to Treat Stroke) will link medical researchers across Canada in an unprecedented attempt to learn how the brains of stroke patients repair themselves with stem cells from their own bodies. 25 scientists in Ottawa and seven other cities hope to train stem cells from diverse parts of the body to travel to the brain's injured area, form themselves into brain cells, connect with other neurons - and actually think. At the University of Calgary, the progress has already begun with rats that have grown back working brain cells - and regained the ability to move their legs - after suffering damage similar to a stroke.
